Nikon Announces P6000 Digicam With Built-in GPS

Nikon today announced its new top-of-the-line Performance series COOLPIX model, the P6000, Nikon's first camera with built-in GPS.

The camera comes with effective 13.5 megapixels, and wide-angle 4x zoom NIKKOR lens including 2 ED glass elements and Nikon’s image-processing system EXPEED. It features built-in GPS, RAW support, and integrated Ethernet connector for image sharing via Nikon's ‘my Picturetown’ and a 2.7-inch high-resolution TFT screen.

Furthermore it features three functions to reduce image blur. High-performance Lens-shift Vibration Reduction (VR) allows sharp pictures with minimal blur and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed three stops faster. Its noise-reduction technology allows a sensitivity range up to ISO 6400. Nikon’s Best Shot Selector allows the camera to take a maximum of 10 sequential shots and automatically saves the sharpest image. This is ideal for macro close-up shooting when camera shake is most likely.

There are six color options for special color effects similar to those obtained using a filter. The Face-priority AF recognizes up to 12 faces for both portrait photography and group images.

D-Lighting automatically ensures images look natural, rescuing underexposed images caused by excessive backlight or insufficient flashlight. Distortion Control ensures subject reproduction and avoids the image distortion that occurs at wide-angle zoom settings or at the peripheries of an image.

COOLPIX in-camera Picture Control, based on the technology from Nikon's award winning D-SLRs, allows the user to flexibly control shooting situations. The camera’s movie function, with the built-in time-lapse movie mode (at up to 640x480 pixels in 30fps), further strengthens the range of creative options.

The camera’s incorporated GPS function will attach a Geotag with positioning information to image files which can then be used on Nikon's ‘my Picturetown’ website, ViewNX or any other website that can handle Geotags, to indicate the precise location of your images.

The COOLPIX P6000 comes with a strap, rechargeable battery and AC adapter, USB and audio/video cables, COOLPIX software suite and free 2GB online storage at Nikon's ‘my Picturetown’.

Sony Launches Two New Digicams

Sony is planning to introduce the Cyber-shot DSC-T700 and DSC-T77 digital cameras with “intelligent” shooting functions.

The 10-megapixel T77 is Sony’s thinnest model at less than 5/8th of an inch with a 3-inch, 16 x 9 touch panel LCD screen. It features updated intelligent scene recognition technology, Smile Shutter and face detection technologies with child and adult priority, as well as high sensitivity shooting (up to ISO 3200), eleven scene modes, and in-camera image management.

The T700 model has all the features of the T77 unit plus 4GB of internal memory that can store nearly 1,000 full-resolution or 40,000 VGA-quality photos; a 3.5-inch, wide touch panel Xtra Fine LCD screen for photo-like viewing (210 pixel-per-inch resolution) with high contrast and wide-angle viewing; and a thin profile (slightly more than 5/8ths of an inch).

Both cameras feature updated intelligent scene recognition technology that can now select up to eight different scene modes, including macro, portrait and landscape modes.

This technology also includes a new anti-blink function in portrait mode in which the cameras will automatically take two shots and then using their advanced face detection technology determine whether the subject(s) have closed eyes. They will only record images with open-eyed subjects. If both pictures have subject(s) with closed eyes, the cameras will record one and display a warning so you can try again.

Sony’s Smile Shutter technology has also been improved. It is easily accessible as a “smiley face” icon, which is now a permanent fixture on the camera’s LCD screen in record mode, and can be toggled off and on with the touch of a finger. During smile capture, auto focus and zoom functions are available, as well as the ability to take a limitless number of shots.
