Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic

The most important thing to know about Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic (A little Love, a Little Magic) is that it is a children’s film. It’s got four child characters, and like many children’s films, there is magic and fantasy. There is even a lecture about patriotism, civic sense and world peace!

It’s Amisha Patel’s character which doesn’t fit. Her role is more suited to an adult movie. That dance number of hers is likely to put many a cabaret girl to shame. I wonder what the director (Kunal Kohli) was thinking of…the dance has no class, and is crass and vulgar. Why should any director make a kiddie film with this kind of scene?

In an interview to Rediff, Kohli actually compares TPTM to Mr. India! But not only was Mr. India is a far superior film, it was a superhero film which could be enjoyed equally by adults and children. TPRM isn’t like that. Adults will not find it as entertaining as the kids. But where the kids are concerned, I think Amisha Patel’s vulgar dance number could make them uncomfortable. Kohli also denies that the movie is based on Mary Poppins and to be fair to Kohli, the story-line is different. But the theme, of a magical nanny who charms children, is like Mary Poppins. So while TPTM may not be a copy, nothing in it seems original. In fact it reminded me of so many movies (both English and Hindi) that it was too tiresome to list them all here.

The story (no spoilers)
This two and a half hour movie is about a rich guy, Ranveer Talwar (Saif Ali Khan) and a lonely one at that. And well fate throws him into the company of four children – all orphans. A feather–headed girl-friend Malaika (Amisha Patel) hangs around him – mainly to titillate audiences. She is supposed to be funny too…because she acts like a dimwit. I wasn’t comfortable with this stereotype and didn’t find it funny. I did wonder however why a rich and bright industrialist should have a stupid (steady!) girl-friend who flaunts her body at every opportunity. if she was part of a playboy’s entourage it would have been believable but Ranveer isn’t portrayed like that. He is serious, smart, a loner and something of a nerd. It would have been far more believable for him to have a girlfriend who was smart, cunning and a gold-digger. Oh but I forgot. Such a girl wouldn’t dance to the director’s sexy number. And titillating audiences is a must isn’t it! What a sad compromise to play to the gallery.

The other character is the demurely clad Geeta (Rani Mukherjee) who cycles into their life much like an angel from heaven. She is a do-gooder brought to bring light and cheer into the sad life of the characters. Completely covered up in long sleeves and long gown not even her ankle showing, she has a loving heart, a bright mind and loves children. The proverbial Hindi film heroine.

The children’s characterisation was unconvincing. They are shown swinging from extreme nastiness to loving, forgiving and cute…but as I said it’s a children’s fantasy movie so it’s alright.

There is actually a butler in this film (!) presumably for comedy. But he is straight out of an English movie! He was quoting Shakespeare and generally looked as if he had come on the set of TPTM by mistake.

Overall the mood of the film is light and cheerful and remains so till the end. The end is predictably a happy one.

The actors
Saif looked good and so did Rani and Amisha. The film didn’t really call for much acting. Saif is supposed to play a brooding loner and he sports a grim look almost throughout. Rani is supposed to be a happy bubbling sort and well she is that almost throughout the film. Amisha is the sexy dimwit who pouts once in a while…all she has to do is shake her assets and that she does that well enough.

If I have to advise someone whether to see the film or not, I would say see it with your kids if you don’t mind that one song in the pool with Amisha and Saif. In fact the movie hall was packed with families. Usually one sees young adults too…but there weren’t any here.

Woodstock VIlla

Woodstock Villa

Hansal Mehta
Cast
Sikander Kher, Neha Uberoi, Arbaaz Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Gaurav Gera

Sonia Chopra
Sanjay Gupta remains incorrigible. After Dus Kahaaniyan's visible flop, he ought to have known better: That just half-clothed heroines, a rocking sound track, an arresting name, and an empty story picked from a hundred DVDs cannot work. The audience demands a coherent story that's well thought out, at least.

Here's a sampling: the hero traipses into an airport with a black leather bag full of illegally got money and no one stops him. He even boards the aircraft, opens the bag exposing the cash and pats it indulgently. But it's illogical to expect logic here. This is a thriller, Gupta factory style, and as long as the actors are charismatic enough, and there?s enough skin show, they?re hoping no one will look at the gaping discrepancies in the script.

We are introduced to wolfy playboy Samir (Sikander Kher) in a scene you could mistake for a modelling portfolio shoot. Once he gets off his too-cool bike, Kher attempts dancing to Saawan mein lag gayi aag, an amateurishly picturised song. So we know that he loves the flashy lifestyle; but back home, his landlord (Shakti Kapoor) who says things like 'beti aur gaadi, dono paraya dhan hai', is after his life for the unpaid rent. Samir needs money, but refuses to work like ordinary mortals.

One evening, at a nightclub, Samir spots a girl who introduces herself as Zara Kampani (Neha Uberoi). He pursues her but she dismisses him with an 'I spell trouble' warning. Evidently, he doesn't know how to read and goes after her anyway. A few days later, she lands up at his home with a sinister plan to test whether her husband really loves her. She begs Samir to kidnap her; he complies for the money, and once they reach the secluded Woodstock Villa, pretends to rape her, so she looks the part of the distraught kidnapped. He then makes the ransom call to her husband Mr Kampani (Arbaaz Khan). Then, predictably, comes the twist in the tale.

Oh yes, and there's also an unnecessary parallel sub-plot of Karim bhai (Gulshan Grover), who trails Samir to get back some big bucks he lent him. Possibly this angle was introduced for the sole purpose of reiterating that the protagonist needed the money real bad.

Woodstock Villa introduces two actors, Sikander Kher and Neha Uberoi. Kher is unconventionally attractive and suits the character of the brooding playboy who's always getting himself into trouble. But it'll need a second film to test his range and adaptability. Uberoi, who complies with Sanjay Gupta's dictate of half-stripping his heroines, is an interesting face and does fairly well. They're both strong on presence and exude dewy freshness and confidence. Gaurav Gera as the hero?s dost and sidekick is a thankful relief from other hammy performances in such roles, like the one in Jannat.

The songs are all superb, a huge advantage to the film. Technically, the film falters in cinematography, which is patchy. Editing is effective and the sound design interesting. The narrative technique is wannabe cool with its superfluous jump cuts, spilt screen fight scenes, and other jazz. Director Hansal Mehta refuses to evolve from his Dus Kahaaniyan stupor and gives us a supposed thriller that rides only on the appeal of the lead actors and the songs. Oh well, so what else is new.

LG Rumored to be Developing 8MP Camera Phone

LG Rumored to be Developing 8MP Camera Phone

The megapixels in mobile cameras are getting higher and higher with Sony launching the C905 slider phone - a new addition to their Cybershot range - with an 8 megapixel camera. Rumor has it that LG doesn’t want to be left too far behind and are working on their 8MP camera phone as well and for now are calling it the KC910.

According to the same sources, this handset will be something to contend with when it comes to its camera features. The ‘KC910’, aside form having a Xenon flash would also be able to record video at 720×480 pixels and 30 frames per second. That’s going to be quite impressive. The camera will also feature image stabilization and face recognition technology among other things. It would also most likely have an 800 x 480 pixel resolution (WVGA) touch screen display.

As of now these are just rumors and there aren’t even any leaked images of the handset yet, so stay tuned. When we know, you’ll know
