NEW APPLE IPHONE COSTS $173 TO MAKE

NEW APPLE IPHONE COSTS $173 TO MAKE

New York
The Economic Times (Bangalore edition)

The cheapest model of Apple Inc’s new iPhone, which is about to go on sale for $199 in the US, costs about $173 to make, according to an estimate by research firm iSuppli Corp. The phone, which updates last year’s model with faster Internet speeds and an improved navigation feature, goes on sale on July 11.

Apple’s profit is much more than the $26 difference between the cost and retail price. The retail price is subsidised by the exclusive carrier, AT&T. In effect, the carrier will be buying the phones from Apple at a higher price, then selling them at a loss that it earns back through monthly service fees.

ISuppli estimates that AT&T will subsidise each phone by $300. Other analysts have put it at $350. In either case, the subsidy creates a substantial margin for Apple. ISuppli said the margin appears to be higher than for other Apple products, which are generally priced 50 percent higher than their cost of materials and manufacturing.

Because the cost of components has come down, the margin is also higher than for the original iPhone, which was introduced last summer. ISuppli then put the cost of the model at $226. The $173 estimate applies to the iPhone version with 8 gigabytes of internal memory. A model with twice as much memory will cost $299 from AT&T, but the extra memory only costs Apple another $22.89, according to iSuppli.

IDEA BUYS SPICE FOR Rs 2,176 CRORE

IDEA BUYS SPICE FOR Rs 2,176 CRORE

Mumbai
The Economic Times | Business Standard | Mint | The Financial Express | The Hindu | The Indian Express | Mumbai Mirror | The Times of India | Deccan Herald | The Hindu Business Line | DNA | The Statesman | Hindustan Times | Mail Today | Deccan Chronicle | The Asian Age | The Tribune | The Pioneer

In one of the biggest deals in the Indian telecom sector, Aditya Birla group’s Idea Cellular on Wednesday said it would acquire BK Modi’s Spice Communications to strengthen its position in the growing telecom market. The deal consists of four related, but distinct transactions.

To begin with, Idea will acquire the Modis’ 40.8 percent stake in Spice. Subsequently, Idea will launch the mandatory 20 percent open offer for the Spice shareholders, jointly with Telekom Malaysia International (TMI).

Idea will merge Spice with itself and offer a 14.99 percent stake to TMI through a preferential allotment. Idea will earn Rs 7,294 crore ($1.7 billion, assuming an exchange rate of Rs 43) by selling this stake to TMI. This would make it one of the largest infusions of FDI into India.

Idea has agreed to buy the Modis’ 28.14 crore shares for Rs 77.30 each, totalling Rs 2,176 crore. In addition, it will shell out Rs 544 crore, or over Rs 19 a share, to the Modis as a non-compete fee. This is under the 25 percent limit (with reference to the open offer price to non-promoter investors) prescribed by Sebi for any such payment.

The 14.99 percent preferential allotment to TMI will ensure that Idea, despite being the purchaser, ends up as a net gainer in the transaction. The net income for Idea, after making payment to the Modis, will be Rs 4,574 crore.

The Idea-TM combine will launch the open offer at Rs 77.30 jointly with TMI, which now holds 39.2 percentin Spice. At this stage it is not clear who will pick up how much. Idea will earn Rs 7,294 crore by selling 46.47 crore preferential shares to TMI for Rs 156.96 apiece.

According to the merger formula, Spice shareholders will get 49 Idea shares for every 100 shares they held. The payment to the Modis is being funded through internal accruals. After completion of the deal, which is expected to be done in next six months, Idea’s equity base will be expanded due to issue of fresh shares to TMI, and also because of the share swap.

On Wednesday, Idea scrip closed at Rs 102.05, up 2.9 percent while Spice scrip touched an all-time high of Rs 73.40, before closing at Rs 72.35, a 33 percent gain over the previous day’s close.

ET first reported on June 10 that Spice shares will be acquired by Idea at between Rs 77 and Rs 78 per share. On June 12, we reported that TMI will buy just under 15 percent stake in Idea through preferential offer and will hold around 20 percent in the merged entity.

“Spice will be de-listed and TMI’s holding in the new Idea (post-merger) will be a maximum of 20 percent (depending on the response to the open offer) and one non-executive board seat,” AV Birla group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said.

The management of the merged entity will be with the Birla group, which will have between 46 percent and 48 percent in the company. The 40.8 percent Spice Telecom stake being acquired by Idea from the BK Modi Group will be cancelled, post the transaction.

DSP Merrill Lynch acted as the financial advisor to Idea, while Enam Securities worked for Modi. Lazard was the financial advisor to TMI.

The deal makes Idea virtually a debt-free company because of the net gain of around Rs 4,500 crore from the deal. Around Rs 2,700 crore was raised by selling stake in Indus Towers to Providence Partners last month. “With this, we become a debt-free company and Idea takes on a high growth trajectory,” said Mr Birla.

Idea Cellular managing director, Sanjeev Aga, said the deal will give Idea an entry into Punjab and Karnataka, where Spice is present and which accounts for 11 percent of India’s total wireless subscribers.

Spice has 4.4 million subscribers. With a total of over 31 million subscribers post-merger, Idea will be the fifth largest operator in India, ahead of Tata Teleservices (TTSL), which has nearly 26 million users.

It will also consolidate Idea’s position, with its all-India market share increasing from 9.5 percent to 11.1 percent. Idea is close to launching operations in Mumbai, Bihar, Tamil Nadu and Orissa in the next four-five months. With Punjab and Karnataka coming into its kitty through the deal, Idea will have almost a nation-wide footprint spanning 17 key circles.

Also, Spice has spectrum in the 900 MHz GSM band, which carries more subscribers than the 1,800 Mhz band. Idea already has spectrum in the 900 Mhz band in seven circles areas, which will increase to nine, driving scale economies and operational synergies.

“This will result in lower operating and capital expenditure,” said Aga.

TMI has 44 million users across 10 Asian markets. “TMI’s experience of operating 3G in similar markets will be of value to Idea, as also the convergent interests of the two companies in areas extending from international traffic to roaming and mobile value added services. Idea and TMI would sign a business co-operation agreement to this effect,” Aga added.

Spice group chairman BK Modi said, “This divestment will enable Spice to re-deploy resources and strengthen the group’s mobile ecosystem businesses led by mobile VAS, mobile devices, telecom retail and customer support.

This transaction makes Spice an operator agnostic services provider, where we will continue to provide services to the Indian mobile telephony market.”

Motorola Unveils Their New MINGs

Motorola is in the news again with the unveiling of two more handsets that we've been keeping tabs on - namely the new MING handsets - the A1600 and A1800. Both handsets are categorized as business class devices running on the same Linux OS; only these new MINGs promise to offer a whole lot more than just a business class feel and features.

Motorola MING A1600
The A1600 is a Quad-band GSM handset that comes equipped with a 2.4-inch TFT touch screen display (QVGA resolution) that can be used with the bundled stylus of course. It supports EDGE and GPRS but doesn’t seem to have 3G support. The A1600 will also feature a 3MP auto-focus camera that will be capable of shooting burst images in a GIF format and storing them as a single file. Like the A1200, the A1600 will also have a business card reader, but apart from that, this new MING handset will also feature a new option of taking pictures of signboards and having them translated with the help of an on board dictionary. Tourists will love this!

The handset will also support external memory via microSD cards. With regard to other connectivity, the A1600 supports Bluetooth with an A2DP profile and Micro USB connectivity. It also has a media player and an integrated FM radio. What really makes this handset more attractive is the fact that it comes equipped with GPS capabilities with Geotagging as well.

Motorola MING A1800
The second MING making its presence is the Dual SIM A1800. It's not too different from the A1600, with its 2.4 inch touchscreen display, 3MP camera, microSD support, Bluetooth A2DP, EDGE / GPRS support and built in GPS.

What's different is its ability to support CDMA and GSM (Tri-Band) SIM cards. There’s no information yet on whether or not both SIMs will be active simultaneously though.

The A1600 has been designed for the Chinese market but that doesn’t mean it won’t make it here. The A1800 will fit in the Indian market like a glove and would definitely do well here considering we have a large number of CDMA and GSM users. There’s no pricing attached to the handsets yet, so stay tuned.

Mere Baap Pehle Aap Movie

RELEASE DATE : 6 June 2008
The name Priyadarshan is synonymous with comic fares. It instantaneously conjures up images of several entertaining films he has attempted over the years. Naturally, you expect his new outing Mere Baap Pehle Aap to be a joyride as well. Even the promos of the film, beamed round the clock on TV, give an impression that it's a laugh-riot.

Sure, Mere Baap Pehle Aap has its share of light moments that make you chuckle, even break into laughter, but it's not a laughathon from start to end. From the interval point onwards, right till the finale, the focus shifts to drama, making the goings-on serious at times.
The concept is truly novel -- for the Hindi screen at least -- but how one wishes Priyan would've controlled its length. Movies of 2 to 2.15 hours duration are fine, but 2.40 hours [add to it the promos of new films, plus interval makes it a 3-hour outing] is strictly no-no in today's times. Priyan should've brought down the length for sure!

Despite hiccups, Mere Baap Pehle Aap has endearing moments that work to its advantage. In a nutshell, it had the potential to rise to the level of Garam Masala, Bhagam Bhag and Bhool Bhulaiyaa, but it eventually ends up being an average fare!

Janaradhan [Paresh Rawal] has spent his life bringing up his two kids, Chirag [Manoj Joshi] and Gaurav [Akshaye Khanna]. Now when the duo has grown up, Gaurav takes up the responsibility of his father. They both manage the household chores and their business to the best of their abilities. Though he is the younger son, he treats his father like his son. Gaurav shouts, threatens, fights, even locks up his father occasionally so that his prankster-friend Madhav [Om Puri], who is desperate to get married, does not spoil him.

Madhav and Janaradhan, who are always in search of a bride for Madhav, forever land up in trouble and every time Gaurav has to bail them out and face the embarrassment.

Gaurav starts getting prank calls from a girl who turns out to be his old college friend Shikha [Genelia D'Souza]. Shikha is staying with her guardian Anuradha [Shobhana], who happens to be Janardhan's first love.

Gaurav and Shikha notice changes in Janaradhan and Anuradha's behaviors when they come face to face after many years. They come to know about their past. Now Gaurav wants his father to get married to his lost love. Of course, the path is not so smooth, there are obstacles.

Mere Baap Pehle Aap begins really well. Om Puri's roving eye, Paresh Rawal's timid nature, Om and Paresh's encounter with lady cop Archana Puransingh -- the sequences are truly very enjoyable. But Genelia's constant calls to Akshaye, though meant to be equally interesting, fall flat; they hardly evoke any mirth.

The twist in the tale -- when Paresh spots Shobhana -- increases your anxiety and you look forward to a gripping tale in the second hour. But it's a mixed bag again. Agreed, people may scoff at the idea of a 60 + man wanting to get married, even though his son [of marriageable age] is a bachelor, but it could've been presented more convincingly. Here, the writer is at fault. The Naseeruddin Shah track in the finale is fine, but his bowing down to Akshaye in a fraction of a minute is difficult to digest.

Directorially, Priyan knows the craft well, no two opinions on that, but he needs to judiciously trim the film by at least 30 minutes for a stronger impact. Vidyasagar's music is a major disappointment. Barring the title track, which runs on the end credits, the other tracks are strictly okay. Piyush Shah's cinematography is excellent and the stunning locales of Kerala act as icing on the cake. Dialogues deserve special mention. Some of the lines are truly well penned. Editing is the weakest link of the enterprise.

Both Akshaye and Paresh live their roles, though there's a possibility that a section of the audience may not really like the son bossing over his father. Acting-wise, Akshaye is, as always, very much with the character, essaying his part with incredible ease. Paresh gets a solid role yet again and he sinks his teeth into it. Again, a job well done!

Genelia looks fresh and pairs off well with Akshaye. She leaves a mark. Om Puri is lovable and a major asset for this movie. Archana Puransingh is excellent. Rajpal Yadav is wasted. Ditto for the powerhouse of talent, Shobhana. She deserved a better deal. Manoj Joshi is fair. Naseeruddin Shah is effective, as always.

SARKAR RAJ

SARKAR RAJ

When Anita [Aishwarya Bachchan], CEO of Sheppard Power Plant, an international company, brings a power plant proposal to set up in rural Maharashtra before the Nagres, insightful Shankar [Abhishek Bachchan] is quick to realize the benefits the power plant can bring to the people.

After convincing Sarkar [Amitabh Bachchan], who is against it for various reasons, Shankar undertakes a journey along with Anita to the villages of Maharashtra to mobilize support from the masses.

However, things are not what they seem to be and Shankar's dream project gradually becomes a political minefield. The evil forces, mightier than ever, mushroom and gang up to bring down the regime of Sarkar and obliterate Shankar's name from the political horizon.

Sarkar Raj exudes a lot of power from the word 'Go'. But let's not categorize Sarkar Raj as yet another "political film". Emotions and relationships run concurrently in those 2+ hours. What works in favor of Sarkar Raj is its tight writing. It's not difficult to decipher the power play, but more importantly, there's meat in the script. It leaves you awe-struck as the plot thickens. The film throws a number of surprises, but the best is reserved for the penultimate 20/25 minutes. The culmination to the story is simply fantastic!

RGV shines like never before. He takes to Sarkar Raj with a vengeance. He has to prove that the sequel is better, he has to prove the detractors wrong too. While RGV has handled the subject with great expertise, you cannot ignore a few scenes that leave a lasting impact...

* Ash's first meeting with the Bachchans to explain the power project;
* Govind Namdev trying to bribe Abhishek;
* The Bachchans' visit to Dilip Prabhawalkar's residence;
* The Bachchans' discussion over Kay Kay [who was shot dead by Abhishek in the prequel];
* The turning point in the film [not to be disclosed];
* The penultimate reels when the real culprit stands exposed. It hits you like a ton of bricks.

Besides its strong content, Sarkar Raj has been filmed exceptionally well too. In fact, Sarkar Raj has the trademark RGV stamp in every sequence. The review would be incomplete without giving the due credit to writer Prashant Pandey's incredible and almost flawless script. Amar Mohile's background score is topnotch. The by-now-famous 'Govinda' chant in the background only enhances the impact. Amit Roy's cinematography is exceptional. The DoP succeeds in giving the film the raw-n-rustic look, which works very well. Action [Allan Amin], in minimal doses, is perfect.

Sarkar Raj is embellished with superb performances! Amitabh Bachchan, expectedly, comes up with a terrific performance. He's as ferocious as a wounded tiger in the finale and takes the film to great heights.

First Yuva, then Guru, now Sarkar Raj. Abhishek Bachchan is cast opposite the finest actor of this country, yet he sparkles in every sequence. This time, the father and son go neck to neck as far as acting honors go. Aishwarya Bachchan is fabulous and delivers her career-best performance in Sarkar Raj. Enough has been written about her looks, but not much space has been devoted to her performances. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Provoked, Guru, Jodhaa Akbar and now Sarkar Raj - she's only got better with every film.

Every supporting actor in Sarkar Raj stands out - Dilip Prabhawalkar [superb], Govind Namdev [first-rate], Sayaji Shinde [perfect], Ravi Kale [terrific] and Supriya Pathak [good]. Tanisha is alright. The actor enacting the role of Dilip Prabhawalkar's grandson makes a strong impact.

On the whole, Sarkar Raj is an exceptional film in all respects. At the box-office, it has all it takes to set new records in days to come!
