Nortel Demo Puts 4G Wireless One Step Closer

Nortel Networks said it has achieved the first live Long Term Evolution handoff between cell sites, an important step for the 4G technology.

During a recent test at a development center in Ottawa, the company was able to maintain a high-definition video stream to a handset while a car - going about 62 miles per hour - traveled between cell sites. The company used Nortel LTE radio, network gear, and a prototype 4G LG Electronics handset to demonstrate the handoff.

One of the biggest draws of LTE is a theoretical 100 Mbps download speed. But Nortel's test saw an average of 10 Mbps over the 10 MHZ channel in Canada's Advanced Wireless Services band.

"We've demonstrated far greater speeds in the past but in a non-handoff environment," said Danny Locklear, Nortel VP of marketing for carrier networks, to reporters.

In June, the company was able demonstrate data speeds of 50 Mbps in a car travelling about 62 miles per hour, but that was within one cell site. It's still too early to judge the technology, Nortel said, and a fully deployed robust network would provide higher download speeds through multiple handoffs. But, as with 3G networks, real-world LTE speeds will vary from the theoretical limits.

Nortel and LG are on track to produce trial LTE gear for early 2009, and commercial equipment may come as early as 2010.

While many are predicting that LTE will be the dominant form of next-generation mobile broadband, time to market could be an important factor because Sprint and Clearwire are set to launch rival technology WiMax in September.

Intel shares MacBook Air love with new small-footprint CPUs

In the blizzard of paper coming out of the Intel Developer Forum (IDF), there was one announcement yesterday that has been virtually overlooked. Even Intel gave it only a cursory mention, stating [Dadi] "Perlmutter also introduced the company's second-generation dual-core mobile processors for increasingly popular ultra thin and light notebook PCs." That's not what anyone would call a high-profile introduction, but the processors themselves could be used by any company keen to compete with the MacBook Air.

The MacBook Air is famous for being extremely thin, even when closed. Part of the secret sauce that enabled Apple to build the system is the small-footprint Merom processor that Intel accelerated into production for the company. As shown below, the packaging for the Merom processor at the heart of the MBA is significantly smaller than a standard mobile processor. Intel also compressed the 965 chipset and, in doing so, reduced the total CPU + chipset footprint by about 60 percent.

The new Centrino processors will be used in both Lenovo's X301 and HP's 2530p, and have a TDP of just 17W. Both the SL9400 (1.8GHz) and the SL9300 (1.6GHz) use a 1066MHz FSB and carry 6MB of L2 cache. Intel is also introducing a pair of 10W processors: the SU9400 (1.4GHz) and SU9300 (1.2GHz). Both of these chips run on an 800MHz FSB and carry 3MB of L2 cache.

Intel's representation of its shrinking chipsets, from full notebooks on one end to Atom on the other.

Apple will, of course, update and improve the MacBook Air, but the fact that these new chips are readily available to OEMs means that the company's second-generation MBA could face much stiffer competition. As for the new 10W parts, we could see them popping up in ultra-small form factor laptops as a way to increase battery life. A 1.2GHz Core 2 Duo may not be particularly compelling from a performance standpoint, but would still exceed the performance of a higher-clocked Atom, while potentially offering some of the features that typically delineate netbooks and notebooks.

Great News :-STD/ISD plan in market using virtual calling cards

As per the recent amendment made by the telecom regulator TRAI, mobile users will now have the freedom to choose any operator for making long distance calls, whether domestic (STD) or international (ISD) irrespective of their subscription to a particular service provider.

So, suppose you are a Vodafone subscriber and you find out that Airtel is offering the cheapest long distance tariffs, you can simply buy a prepaid long distance pack from Airtel for a specific time duration, punch in numbers mentioned on the pack, get on to the Airtel network and make your long distance call.

This whole thing of using virtual calling cards to make long distance calls works out in three simple steps:

  1. Buy a prepaid virtual calling card of your desired operator
  2. Punch in the calling card code on your mobile handset
  3. Use STD/ISD services of the new operator

iPhone to be launched today at Rs 31,000

Apple’s new iPhone

Thomas K. Thomas

New Delhi, Aug. 20 The much-talked about iPhone 3G will be launched in the country on Thursday, starting at Rs 31,000.

The device will be launched by both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar. The higher version of the phone manufactured by Apple is likely to cost Rs 36,100.

Meanwhile, rival phone makers are also planning to up their ante on multimedia devices. While Nokia has already announced its plans to launch N96, LG is introducing its RD10000, the latest CDMA mobile handset, in India tomorrow. LG claims that this phone provides features and facilities that are on a par with iPhone in the CDMA space. The cost of the LG phone is approximately Rs 20,000.

Windows-based HTC is also lining up its range of smart phones to take advantage of the hype over iPhone.

“One will see a range of launches in the high-end segment over the coming weeks. So far Indian mobile market talked about low-end phones for the mass market. However, the buzz over iPhone has certainly created an interest among consumers about the high-end devices. Most manufacturers will use this opportunity to showcase their product and compare it with iPhone,” said an industry analyst.

The interest in these high-end multimedia devices is being driven by the fact that there are 50 million mobile subscribers in India who surf the Internet on their handsets.

Idea Cellular is expected to launch the iPhone sometime in September this year, the company Managing Director, Mr Sanjeev Aga, said today.

According to one survey, people with converged devices use only 12 per cent of the total time on making voice calls. Ninety per cent of the time, people are using other functionality of multi-talented devices.

Not surprisingly, new mobile devices and Internet services consume more bandwidth and place greater demands on mobile networks, which still focus heavily on voice traffic.

For example, the first Apple iPhone generated 50 times more Google search traffic than any other mobile device during the 2007 Christmas period. In addition, the iPhone typically consumes more bandwidth than competing devices as services are not compressed (100 MB per month for iPhone compared to 10 MB for BlackBerry).

Network specialists such as Ciena believe that mobile operators should ensure scalability for new data services without sacrificing support for legacy voice services by making the network resilient enough to cope with extreme peaks of bandwidth intensive applications.

Happy Independence Day on15th August

August 15, 1947, the most important day in the history of India, the day when the long suppressed nation found utterance, it was the day when India got independence from the British rule. The stroke of the midnight brought with it a ray of new hope for India, as our first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru said, the world was asleep but India awoke to life and freedom. A new nation was born! Since then August 15 is celebrated as the independence day in India every year.

History of Independence

The struggle for Indian independence began with the colonialization of India by Europeans. They came to India as traders but over the period of time they rose to power took control of Indian affairs. British occupied most parts of India whereas Portuguese and French also had their influence on few places The first uprising which is noted in the history of independence of India took place in 1857. This first war of Indian independence, was termed as a mutiny by the British. Although not a success, this revolt sowed the seed for a new force, which was to take this struggle to its rightful end. As British oppression strengthened so did the urge to attain the freedom from it. This urge found voice in form of many great leaders such as Subhash Chandra Bose, Lala Lajpat Rai, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Khudiram Bose, Ram Prasad Bismil,Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to name a few. These great patriots along with a lot unnamed freedom fighters sacrificed their lives for the cause of the nation. Independence from the British rule was the sole aim of their lives. This dream of millions of Indians was realized when finally India got freedom on August 15, 1947. The joy of independence brought along with it the grief of partition! The country was divided into two parts - India and Pakistan. Pakistan assumed August 14 as its independence day whereas August 15 was declared the independence day for India.

Independence Day Celebrations

Celebrated all across the nation with great enthusiasm, the day is marked with the Indian flag hoisting ceremony at Red Fort and Prime Minister's address to the nation. All the state buildings and structures of national importance are adorned with 'Tricolor'. In the evening , sky is dotted with hundreds of colorful kites symbolizing the freedom. The soaring kites in the sky also signify the soaring dreams of independent India which wants to attain great heights and give the message that sky is the limit.

Wanted (2008)

SOURCE : Wanted 2008 R5 LINE (NEW AUDIO) H264-KingBen

"Wanted" tells the tale of one apathetic nobody's transformation into an unparalleled enforcer of justice. In 2008, we're introduced to a hero for a new generation: 25 year old employed slacker, WESLEY GIBSON. Wes is the most disaffected, cube-dwelling, clock-punching drone this planet has ever known. His boss chews him out hourly, his girlfriend ignores him routinely, and his life plods on in interminable boredom and routine. Everyone knows this disengaged slacker will amount to absolutely nothing, and so does he, until he meets the sexy, foxy woman named FOX, and then everything changes. Wes' estranged father is murdered, and the deadly Fox recruits him into The Fraternity, a secret society that trains him to avenge his father's death, by unlocking his dormant powers. And oh boy does he have powers, as she teaches Wes how to develop his lightning-quick reflexes and phenomenal agility, he discovers that The Fraternity lives by an ancient, unbreakable code: to carry out the death orders given by emotionless Fate itself. Wes, with his wickedly brilliant and sexy tutor, plus the paternal guidance of The Fraternity's enigmatic leader, SLOAN, young Wes grows to enjoy all the strength and success he ever wanted. But, slowly, he realizes there's more to his dangerous associates than meets the casual eye. And, as he wavers between new found heroism and vengeance, Wes will come to learn what no one can ever teach him; that he alone controls his destiny
