MapmyIndia maps now on Garmin GPS device

MapmyIndia maps now available to Garmin GPS device users

Safe and secure travel for Indian and foreign travellers carrying Garmin devices

New Delhi, March 31, 2009: MapmyIndia, India's leading map and GPS navigation services provider, has announced that users of Garmin GPS devices can now install MapmyIndia’s highly detailed and accurate India maps on their devices. With this new development Garmin device users will have access to maps of 202 cities, 130,000 towns and villages, 450,000 point of interests, and navigate to 640,000 unique reachable destinations across India. Garmin device users – especially foreign travellers to India – who have so far been unable to make full use of their GPS devices, can now use MapmyIndia maps to make travel in India, safe, secure and stress free.

With the launch of maps for Garmin devices, MapmyIndia has opened a new market in India for retailing of maps for GPS devices popular in other countries. Till now users could buy GPS devices abroad but these became almost useless because of a lack of exhaustive and accurate maps dataset in India. The availability of MapmyIndia’s maps for Garmin GPS devices provides them the familiarity of the Garmin device interface with India’s most exhaustive navigable GPS data set powering it.

Compatibility
The MapmyIndia maps for Garmin devices are compatible with a range of Garmin devices including Nüvi 2xx, 2xxW, 6xx, 7xx and 13xx series. Visit navigator.mapmyindia.com/garmin_mmi_map_offer.html for a complete listing. The maps are available on an SD card and incorporate technology provided by Garmin, to fully integrate with the Garmin device and give users the best GPS navigation experience.

“With the growth in demand for MapmyIndia Navigators we also received queries from users of other GPS devices. They were interested in knowing if, and when, they would be able to use MapmyIndia maps on their devices. There were similar queries from foreign travellers – both business travellers and tourists – who could not use fully utilize their Garmin devices in India because of lack of good quality digital maps. Therefore, it was natural for MapmyIndia to make available the India maps for other devices, starting with Garmin devices,” says Rakesh Verma, Managing Director, MapmyIndia.

Price and availability
The MapmyIndia maps for Garmin devices are available at INR 7000 (MRP). The maps can be bought online at navigator.mapmyindia.com/buy.html#anc_buy_garmin. MapmyIndia customer care will take users through the process of installing MapmyIndia maps on their devices.

Delhi Traffic details click away

Indian cities are known for their traffic chaos and the obvious opportunity in this space is to help people with live traffic data.

Thetrafficpeople is a Delhi based portal that collects traffic information from various sources (traffic police / civic agencies etc) and updates information on their website (via).

The current version of the site is purely an information consumption and doesn’t offer needed services like search/traffic information for particular area etc.

Most importantly, it seems to be operational heavy and hence, questions over scaling a product like this to other cities (Mapunity has partnered with Airtel and uses cell-ids to track traffic, a far more technical solution than relying purely on feet-on-street).

Mapunity too has launched it’s Delhi portal (dtis.in) which showcases live traffic situation overlaid on the map.

If you are from Delhi, do give TheTrafficPeople a ride – do you think it solves a serious pain (given their current focus on information push)?

Bank Bazaar:- Loan Calculation,Credit Card etc.

There are tons of startups in financial instrument rate comparison space, but the space is far from being termed ‘overcrowded’ – mostly because the smaller players are active in few regions only and of course, banks need to have multiple channels/lead generators to sell their financial instruments.

BankBazaar, Chennai based startup offers platform to compare rates between different financial institutions and to apply for the loan online.

The company is betting big on transparency that they offer (well, most of the loans have lot of ‘hidden’ numbers) – they even expose secondary fees in the final calculations.

Essentially, you can get customized loan quotes from multiple banks within few minutes – the interface is neatly done and BankBazaar does take care of certain points (for instance, most of the banks have a list of preferred companies, the same is uploaded on the site as well; one can slide through different amount/tenure combinations).

Everest soon in mobile coverage.

Thursday, April 23, 2009: The world's highest mountain peak will soon be getting cell phone service with Nepal Telecom (NT) announcing plans to install a satellite antenna in Gorak Shep, located at an altitude of 5,160 metres. Nepal Telecom will be providing both GSM and CDMA handsets with cell reception on Mt. Everest starting in June.

Anoop Ranjan Bhattarai, chief, satellite division, Nepal Telecom, told myrepublica.com, "We are planning to commence the service by mid-June this year. We hope it will provide an alternative to those currently relying on satellite phone services such as the one provided by Thuraya."

NT has installed satellite antennas in around seven locations in the Mt Everest region, including Lukla and Namche Bazar, located at 2,800 metres and 3,440 metres above sea level, respectively. "All these antennas can smoothly handle around 3,000 calls at once. But we will increase the number of terminals depending on the traffic in the region," said NT.

Nepal Telecom currently has around 2.8 million cellphone subscribers across the country.

Huawei Jumping Frog

Chinese vendor Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. is on course to break into the top-four telecom equipment vendor ranking this year, and may even leapfrog its way into second place in the revenues table if it meets its targets and other vendors suffer from the economic downturn.

Huawei today unveiled its annual report for 2008, which includes its audited financial figures. According to the vendor, it generated revenues of $18.33 billion last year, and net income of $1.15 billion. (See Huawei Reports 2008 Revenues of $18.3B.)

In the telecom vendor league table, that puts Huawei in fifth position, which is where it was last year too: In fact, the 2008 vendor ranking order hasn't changed year-on-year.

Table 1: How Huawei Stacks Up Against Other Vendors

2008 revenues in US$* 2008 revenues in local currency
Cisco** $39.5 billion Not applicable
Ericsson $24.47 billion 208.9 billion Swedish kronor
Alcatel-Lucent $21.97 billion €17 billion
Nokia Siemens Networks $19.78 billion €15.3 billion
Huawei $18.33 billion 125 billion Chinese Yuan Renminbi
Nortel Networks $10.4 billion Not applicable
ZTE $6.49 billion 44.3 billion Chinese Yuan Renminbi
* Converted at exchange rates sourced on April 22, 2009
** Revenues for Cisco from most recent full fiscal year ending July 26, 2008

What has changed, though, is how close Huawei is to the leading pack: Check out this Light Reading story from last year to see how far behind Huawei was lagging in 2007.

Now, though, the Chinese giant is breathing down the neck of Nokia Siemens Networks , and, if Huawei can maintain its momentum and convert contract wins into revenues in the same manner as it has done for the past two years, it could find itself much higher up the ranking for 2009.

With so much 3G rollout business to be won in China this year, and with its feet firmly embedded in many of the markets that are still growing despite the global economic mess, Huawei has estimated that the value of its 2009 contract sales -- quite different from reported revenues -- will be $30 billion. (See Huawei Predicts 29% Growth in 2009.)

As one of the tables in our story on Huawei's reported 2008 revenues shows, the ratio of actual revenues to contract sales has averaged at 78.6 percent during the past two years. If it can maintain that ratio and hit its contract sales target of $30 billion (and Huawei has a history of achieving, and often exceeding, its targets), it's on course to generate revenues of $23.6 billion this year.

Given the forecasts that have been made by the likes of Nokia Siemens, Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), and Ericsson AB (Nasdaq: ERIC) during the past few months, it's just possible that Huawei, in terms of revenues expressed in U.S. dollars, could climb the vendor ranking table all the way to second place, with only Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) to catch.

It could even be argued that with Cisco's enterprise customers generating a sizeable portion of its sales, Huawei might even be on course to be the largest supplier of equipment and services to the telecom operator community this year.

That's only a possibility, of course. Currency exchange fluctuations and any number of other factors, including the performance of Huawei's chief rivals and even potential acquisitions, could still leave it chasing the pack by the end of this year. What's clear, though, is that Huawei has joined the elite club of major vendors, and its aggression and international aspirations are likely to keep it there. (See NSN Linked to Nortel Asset Bid.)

  • KKR is the only franchisee to have a television show to select cheerleaders for their home matches.
  • The main theme of the team Korbo, Lorbo, Jitbo Re (We will do it, Fight for it, Win it) has been created by the Vishal - Shekhar duo. A Knight Rider album with several singers and music composers including Usha Uthup and Bappi Lahiri will also be created.

  • With five run-outs in their innings at Mumbai on May 21, 2008, Mumbai Indians earned a dubious distinction in the IPL.
  • The team logo has the Sudarshana Chakra with the team's name engraved in it.
  • Hritik Roshan, superstar of Bollywood, is the brand ambassador of MI.
  • The MI home ground, Wankhede Stadium, hosted the most number of matches in the IPL 2007 – 08. It hosted the semi-finals and final apart from the MI home games.

Kings XI Punjab

  • When Priety Zinta’s star friends came to visit her, she made a part of the squad move out of the hotel into “bargain-basement” accommodation.
  • An exciting last over from VRV Singh - which included a six, a four, a dropped catch and three crucial run-outs - allowed Kings XI Punjab to end Mumbai Indians' six-game winning streak.
  • The only batsman last year to face 400 balls in the competition was Shaun Marsh - 441. He aggregated 616 runs at an average of 68.44 in 11 games.
  • Even though KXI are owned by the Bollywood star Priety Zinta, their brand ambassador was Daler Maehndi.

Deccan Chargers

  • DC is the only team to have won by a margin of 10 wickets in IPL 2007 – 08.
  • Deccan Charges have lost all the matches in their home stadium.
  • DC captain VVS Laxman was initially awarded icon status, but he voluntarily opted out of it, so that the franchisee had more money with which to bid.

IPL teams 2009

    Founded: 2008

Profile:

The Mumbai Indians were expected to kiss the skies, captained as it is by India's most favourite cricketer Sachin Tendulkar.

However, Tendulkar could not play the initial phase of the tournament after sustaining an injury. In a side that boasted of the likes of Sanath Jayasuriya and Shaun Pollock, the stand in skipper's role went to Indian offs-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who made a complete mess of the opportunity.

Bhajji not only looked out of sorts with the ball but was at sea, leading the start studded side. He crossed severe limits when he slapped S. Sreesanth after a match with the King's XI Punjab.

Sree left no stone unturned to make a spectacle out of the situation, crying like a man possessed as the entire world watched in shock.

Bhajji was banned for the rest of the tournament besides being docked of all his IPL fees.

Sreesanth was also left off with a warning.

Jayasuriya had a torrid time in the beginning but came to his elements when he was joined by Tendulkar and after a couple of matches, the two senior pros went on an all out rampage.

Robin Uthappa was a disappointment in the middle order and could not make anything of his chances.

Pollock was brilliant with the new ball, restricting the run flow and came up with a few cameos with the bat.

Mumbai Indians would certainly have felt the pinch in the spin department with the loss of Harbhajan.

With Zaheer Khan swapping places with Uthappa, this time, the bowling would be spectacular. Pollock would not play this year but would act as a mentor for the boys.

Team owner Mukesh Ambani has also brought in South African sensation Jean Paul Duminy and that would pep up the middle order and leave the opposition with a lot to think.

Indian heroes Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir were the key signings for a Delhi side that started brightly but which eventually failed to deliver the goods. The Delhi Daredevils franchisee, GMR, made sure that the team had the best IPL line-up of local players.

Local lad Shikhar Dhawan was sensational in the middle order and backed up the great starts by Gambhir and Sehwag. Dhawan came in, on most occasions after the team had got off to flying starts and never failed to carry on the momentum.

Left arm seamer Pradeep Sangwan acted as a great foil for the liked of Glenn McGrath, Fervez Mahroof and Mohammad Asif.

Leg spinner Amit Mishra pumped in a hat-trick and bowled economically to keep the opposition under check.

Sri Lankan all-rounder Mahroof chipped in with some nice contributions before wicketkeeper batsman Dinesh Karthik also joined the party with a gritty fifty after some ordinary outings.

Then Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik had a torrid time, failing to capitalise on a couple of good starts, rendering the middle order weak.

With Paul Collingwood coming in for the second edition, Delhi can count on some fireworks. Add English all-rounder Owais Shah and you have a team that could make serious bid for the title.

Sehwag's boys got off to a good start, winning four of their five games but mysteriously thereafter lost the zip despites some good individual performances.

The Daredevils have a new uniform this season and with a couple of exciting Twenty20 talents in the ranks, the fans could rest assured of a resurgent team led by a resurgent captain.

Sehwag has over the last year transformed miraculously as a player, destroying bowling attacks with consistency.

It is this consistency that would help the Nawab of Najabgargh lead his team with an air of consummate ease.

With world class all rounders in the shape of Irfan Pathan and James Hopes, not to mention the undoubted ability of Yuvraj Singh, Mahela Jayawardene and Kumara Sangakkara, the King's XI Punjab were the team to watch out for.

Young Australian talent Shaun Marsh joined the team after four games and stormed into international limelight, becoming the highest run scorer in the tournament.

Jayawardene and Sangakkara threw in the Sri Lankan touch and with Yuvraj Singh made up the most attractive batting line up in the tournament.

The bowling looked great with Aussie tearaway Brett Lee and S. Sreesanth letting lose some steam with the ball.

Leg spinner Piyush Chawla showed his mettle in the crucial middle overs and with Yuvraj made a potent spinning pair.

Yuvraj led the side astutely, though losing his cool more often than it looked good on TV. However, his aggression rubbed off on the boys and they marched along to the semi finals before running out of steam.

Sangakkara underlined his role as one of the best wicketkeeper batsmen in contemporary cricket, scoring some consistent runs and entreating the massive turn outs with his brilliant glove work.
Yuvraj would miss Sreesanth in the second edition after he failed to recover from an injury.

However, the addition of English all-rounder Ravi Bopara should add some much needed balance in the side that has the talent to upset all calculations.

The fielding is brilliant with Yuvi leading the way and the likes of Jaywardene, Lee and Marsh bringing up a sharp circle to pierce.

A closely knit team, the King's XI seemed to enjoy each other's success and looks determined to turn the tables this year after promising so much last year. This team can fight and the others in the fray need to watch out.

The Knight Riders were led by the best captain India has ever seen and was graced by players like Ricky Ponting, Ishant Sharma, and Shoaib Akhtar.

But the biggest impact was made by New Zealand wicketkeeper batsman Brendon McCullum, who blasted a hundred in the opening game against Banaglore Royal Challengers before the bowlers came back to fold up the Bangalore innings for less than 100.

However, the joy was short lived as the Knight Riders failed to find any momentum as the tournament progressed.

Umar Gul's precise yorkers, Ishant's accuracy and Murali Kartik's control were the buzzwords before the tourney began but, apart from Gul, few impressed.

Ponting did not justify his brief stay, scoring two successive ducks and looked completely out of sorts.

Shoaib battled his injuries before finally getting a chance to play. He did impress the massive home crowd with his sheer pace in a game against the Delhi Daredevils but did not give out much hope.

Sri Lankan mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis joined the Knight Riders and gave his first glimpse to sub-continent audiences.

Ganguly did not get too many runs and struggled with the stars not performing to potential with David Hussey being the only exception, who waged many a lone battles.

The John Buchanan-Ganguly combination was expected to work out some more magic but the team seemed to have signed up too many players who had to leave for national assignments after the first leg.

Knight Riders were not helped by the fact that Pakistani opener Salman Butt could not continue his love affair with the Eden Gardens.

Ishant, coming off a brilliant tour Down Under, failed miserably and was a huge disappointment, considering the fact that he was the second most expensive Indian player after MS Dhoni.

Of all the franchisees, Emerging Media probably held their cards closest to their chest.

Undoubtedly the dark horses for the tournament, Rajasthan went on to lift the trophy, despite many pundits initially declaring that they had no chance.

However, spin legend, captain and coach of the team, Shane Warne had other plans.

Warnie chalked out his strategies very shrewdly and showed the world why he was the best captain never to lead Australia.

The team did not boast of too many starts with South African skipper Graeme Smith joining the team late but when he finally did, he did so with a bang.

The entire team was a story of underdogs. Ravinder Jadeja played beautifully in the middle order, Yusuf Pathan blasted the balls to all corners of the park and was an asset with the ball while Pakistani wicketkeeper batsman Kamran Aklam was brilliant behind the stumps.

Pakistan swing bowler Sohail Tanveer was exceptional, claiming 21 wickets in the tournament and wrecking havoc with the new ball. He was well assisted by Munaf Patel, whose aggression with the ball surprised many.

Shane Watson, who has had a chequered career for Australia as an all-rounder, thanks to injuries shone the brightest.

Watson was outstanding with the ball and played some match winning knocks, going on to become the Player of the Tournament.

Warne himself was brilliant with the ball, getting wickets, restricting the run flow and breaking partnerships regularly.

The former Aussie leg spinner nurtured the young Indian players at his disposal and was able to bring out the best in them, paving the way for a great upset when the Royals finally met Chennai Super Kings in the finals.

No one had expected Rajasthan Royals to achieve what they did. After all, they had no stars but Warne and his boys showed that cricket is a team game, where every player has a role to play and each of the Royals played their role to perfection.

Shaun Tait and Tyron Henderson are the latest additions in the Royals enclosure and though Tanveer's loss would hurt the Rajasthanis this year, Tait can rattle some nerves with his sheer pace.

Henderson has had a good outing for Middlesex and Warne would want him to replicate his success in the IPL this year.

IPL 2009 teams

    Founded: 2008

Profile: The city of Hyderabad undoubtedly had the best team at the start of the tournament, but they were to fall apart like ninepins. With arguably the three best Twenty20 specialist all rounders in their ranks - Andrew Symonds, Scott Styris and Shahid Afridi - the team had what was needed to rock the scene.

However, Afridi disappointed like he had no business to. He came and perished almost with an uneasy preciseness, that did his "Boom Boom" image no good.

Andrew Symonds notched up a thundering hundred during his stint but his stay with the Deccans was too short to make a lasting impact.

Another big let down was the way Herschelle Gibbs played. He just failed to fire and that had a severe impact on the team's performance.

The Deccans also lost skipper VVS Laxman early, thanks to an injury, allowing Gilchrist to step in as captain.

Gilly did a wonderful job of giving the team some explosive starts with breathtaking consistency. But there was not much he could have done when stars like Afridi, Gibbs and Styris failed.

The surprise package was Rohit Sharma, who joined the party with Gilly to make a name for himself. He stood up and got counted and got noticed when the bigger stars fizzed out.

Afridi may have been a disappointment with the bat but made up with the ball, getting some prized wickets, getting the ball to rip, bounce and turn.

The rest of the bowlers took some hammering with Sri Lankan pace spearhead Chamindaa Vaas and Indian left arm seamer RP Singh being hit around ruthlessly.

The fielding was top notch with the likes of Gibbs, Afridi, Sharma and Symonds sprinting around like leopards on the prowl and with Gilchrist joining them for the full season there should have been no looking back.

Unfortunately, the team never looked ahead.

IPL 2009 Teams

    Founded: 2008

Profile: India Cements pulled no punches during the selection process. From MS Dhoni and Matthew Hayden to some of the best all-rounders like Jacob Oram and Albie Morkel, fireworks galore were crammed inside this team from the south of India. Not surprisingly, CSK won its first four matches.

It wasn't to last however, and the team started struggling after its aces from 'Down Under' ventured back to play for their national sides.

Hadyen and consistent middle-order pro Michael Hussey had to join the team once the international calendar beckoned but young Indian turks Suresh Raina and S. Badrinath stepped up to join the party for the Southern giants.

It was the IPL which brought Raina back to national reckoning again, highlighting his big hitting prowess and with Badri and Dhoni, the middle order looked pretty formidable.

Parthiv Patel, opening the innings with former New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming gave a good account of himself.

Fleming, though could have done more, give what he had achieved for the Kiwis in his and long and illustrious playing career.

Another star who did not live up to some massive expectations was Dhoni. He did a great job of leading a team studded with international jewels but would have liked his bat to make some more noises.

India discard Lakshimapty Balaji kept coming at the batsmen with some innovative spells, even bagging a hat-trick in the process.

Sri Lankan spin sensation Muttiah Muralitharan was ripped apart on the flat tracks and his vicious turn went for a toss in the face of some ferocious onslaught.

Not only did Murali concede runs, he was unable to force many wickets, leaving many to wonder what had actually gone wrong.

Despite some setbacks, the team did well enough to reach the finals of the inaugural edition. The city known for its spicy Dosas, definitely threw chillies in the eyes of the opposition right from the word go.
