Intel Slashes C2D Prices By 31 Percent

In a surprising but welcome move, Intel has reduced the price of some key C2D processor by as much as 31 percent. The new price cuts include desktop Core 2 Duo E8500 (3.16GHz) which now sells for $183 instead of $266, the quad-core Q6600 dropping to $193 from to $224 and the budget champion the E7200 falling from $199 to $183. Intel's server-based Xeon line also saw some price reductions. The X3220 (2.4 GHz) processor dropped to $198 from $224 respectively.

While these price cuts are quite welcome, all they do is consolidate Intel's stranglehold on the desktop market.

Though AMD has reported higher sales in the last quarter, they don’t quite have a killer product range that can compete with Intel's faster and more streamlined range. The only place that AMD seems to have had success lately has been in the GPU market, where its 4850/4870 range has been doing quite well against offerings from Nvidia.
