Tata Offer pay-per-call

Telecom operator Tata Teleservices Tuesday launched a scheme that will enable its CDMA subscribers to talk endlessly for just Re.1.

Breaking away from the usual practice of charging subscribers on a one minute-pulse basis, Tata Teleservices CDMA callers will be charged Re.1 for all local calls and Rs.3 for long distance calls, regardless of the duration of the call.

The pay-per-call product has been launched on the prepaid platform, and subscribers opting for it will be charged a daily fee of Re.1.

The company is also offering short messages service (SMS) at Re.0.50, for both local and national SMS.

The pay-per-call service will be offered by Tata Indicom, the CDMA arm of Tata Teleservices.

"Pay-per-call will change the pricing paradigm in the telecom space," said Tata Teleservices managing director Anil Sardana.

Added Vineet Bhatia, the company's chief operating officer for Delhi and head of the northern region: "The service gives consumers freedom to talk to their hearts' content without any of the hassles they face on the charging front."

The world's top cellphone maker Nokia will start to make laptops, entering a fiercely competitive but fast-growing market with a netbook running Microsoft's Windows operating system.

Nokia had earlier this year said it was considering entering the laptop industry, crossing the border between two converging industries in the opposite direction to Apple, which entered the phone industry in 2007 with the iPhone. Nokia has seen its profit margins drop over the last quarters as handset demand has slumped, and analysts have worried that entering the PC industry, where margins are traditionally razor-thin, could hurt Nokia's profits further. "We are fully aware what has the margin level been in the PC world. We have gone into this with our eyes wide open," Kai Oistamo, the head of Nokia's phone unit, told Reuters. "There's really an opportunity to bring fresh perspective to the PC world," he said, adding that Nokia would introduce extended battery life and continuous connectivity. Nokia has produced PCs before, but divested the unit in 1991 when it started to focus on the mobile phone industry. But Nokia's first netbook, the Nokia Booklet 3G, will use Microsoft's Windows software and Intel's Atom processor to offer up to 12 hours of battery life while weighing 1.25 kilograms. Netbooks are low-cost laptops optimised for surfing the Internet and performing other basic functions. Pioneered by Asustek with the hit Eee PC in 2007, netbooks have since been rolled out by other brands such as HP and Dell. "The question is: How will Nokia differentiate? This is already a crowded market. If they manage to differentiate it's going to give them competitive advantage," said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi.

Research firm IDC expects netbook shipments this year to grow more than 127 percent from 2008 to over 26 million units, outperforming the overall PC market that is expected to remain flat and a phone market which is shrinking some 10 percent. "Nokia will be hoping that its brand and knowledge of cellular channels will play to its strengths as it addresses this crowded, cut-throat segment," said Ben Wood, director of research at CCS Insight. "At present we see Nokia's foray into the netbook market as a niche exercise in the context of its broader business." Nokia's choice of Windows software surprised some analysts who had expected the company to use Linux in its first laptop. Analyst Neil Mawston from Strategy Analytics said the technology choices were a good win for the U.S. companies. "We believe ARM and Symbian are among the main losers from the Nokia Booklet announcement," he said. Shares in ARM were 0.2 percent lower at 1400 GMT, underperforming slightly firmer DJ Stoxx European technology shares index. Shares in Nokia were 1.6 percent stronger at 8.91 euros, while Microsoft was 0.6 percent firmer. Nokia said it would unveil detailed specifications, market availability and pricing of its new device on Sept 2.

A source close to Nokia said the new netbook would use the upcoming Windows 7 operating system. Microsoft says a stripped-down version of Windows 7 will be introduced to netbooks the same time as its general release on Oct. 22. Local media reports in Taiwan have said that Compal, the world's No. 2 contract laptop PC maker, has pitched netbook models to Nokia, but there has been no official confirmation from either side. Nokia declined to comment on the manufacturer it uses. Following in the footsteps of Sony Ericsson, BlackBerry, an unlikely candidate, has apparently decided to go into the Bluetooth Watch business according to reports. Of course keeping in tune with their shift from hardcore business devices to full function devices ready for all media as well as fully equipped for business of course, this doesn’t seem too out of character.

According to the reports the Bluetooth enabled watches are going to be a little more sophisticated than what we’ve seen from SE so far. The feature could possibly include -

The world of camera phones has just gotten to a billet more interesting with a Chinese company called Altek who have designed their first ever 12 megapixel camera phone. While that my not seem impressive because the 12.2MP resolution is slowing becoming the new 8MP, this particular handset takes things up a notch by also incorporating 3X optical zoom making it a World’s first.

The Huajing Altek Company’s original focus has been in the manufacturing of digital imaging technology. They have now decided to also focus on R & D and manufacturing of the same idea but by incorporating the same into other applications and products like the mobile handset, which only makes sense. Their offering in the Altek T8680 is what the industry could call a "professional video phone”. It’s been designed to work just like a digicam and process images even in low light conditions as good as any stand alone digital camera. Micromax tried incorporating a 3X optical zoom lens onto their 8 megapixel camera phone the X800 so this concept has been tried before. What instantly comes to mind though is the kind of weight this handset would have as the X800 was an extremely bulky device. The T8680, weighs in at about 135g and has dimension of 113.5 x 52.0 x 16.55mm which doesn’t seem too bad.

The handset is expected to be released sometime at the end of this month or in September. The approximate pricing is said to be around Rs. 22,000. There’s no word on it’s launch in India so we’ll have to wait and see. The real question is weather the T8680 could give Sony Ericsson and Samsung's offerings a run for their money? Stay tuned.

MotionTouch, a product design and manufacturing business based at Dunsfold Park in Surrey, has designed and manufactured Powcell, a light-powered mobile phone charger.

The Powcell sleeve slides onto the back of a mobile phone handset and its solar panel uses light to charge the unit making Powcell an environment-friendly product. The sleeve keeps the phone charged reducing the chance of a low battery during calls.

Powcell has an internal battery that is charged by exposure to light, even when the sleeve is removed from the phone - so when reconnected the phone will work even if its battery is exhausted. This means if that if a phone battry has died completely Powcell provides the power for more talk-time.

The initial versions of the Powcell sleeve have been designed for the Apple iPhone series and BlackBerry devices.

Powcell's large solar panel provides the a large surface area for light-capture and also works in some ambient light conditions.

Being a Wi-Fi enabled device, the PMP could now be taking things up a notch by adding communication via voice and image to the media device. By 2011 the number of cell sites will be 4,000 and the presence will be in 3,300 towns," Himanshu Kapania, director (operations) of Idea, told reporters while launching the company's services here Thursday.

Idea, which launched services in Tamil Nadu last month, now has has 1,700 cell sites in 600 towns in the state and has enrolled over 100,000 subscribers so far.

Citing Idea's successful penetration into the telecom market in the state, Kapania said: "It only shows that subscribers are not satisfied with the existing service providers. The call drop numbers are huge. We hope to garner subscribers with our service quality."

Idea will also set up a 2,086-km optical fibre network.

He added that 12 million of its total 43 million subscribers are in Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.

In Tamil Nadu the company will open 60 outlets to roll out its services.

Idea will will invest around Rs.7,500 crore this year to expand its services into new areas, Kapania added.

Samsung Launches 250 GB HDD

Strengthening its line up of portable 1.8" hard drives for external storage markets, Samsung Electronics has announced its 250 Gigabyte 1.8 inch hard disk drive, the Spinpoint N3U which incorporates a native USB controller on its printed circuit board. This optimized design results in a smaller foot print, less power consumption and optimized performance, which is ideal for portable external storage devices.

The Spinpoint N3U stores up to 125 Gigabytes per platter for a total 250GB data storage capacity.

Samsung's N3U drive, however, uses a native USB interface and as such does not require this bridge board.

"The new high-capacity 1.8" 250GB drive enhances Samsung's product offerings and is ideal for consumers who require a small form factor, high capacity data storage," said Choel-Hee Lee, vice president of marketing Storage System Division, Samsung Electronics. Another rumor making the rounds is what seems to be another new Sony Ericsson Xperia-like handset that will apparently be ready to run on an Android OS. Once again we see leaked images arise. The images seem to portray a rather large touchscreen device with an Xperia branding on the rear. The handset is being called the Sony Ericsson Xperia Rachel.

Johannesburg: Jacques Kallis hit an unbeaten 58 and pace bowler Praveen Kumar took three wickets Tuesday to guide the Bangalore Royal Challengers to a seven-wicket victory over the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League.

Kallis struck two boundaries and two sixes in 56 balls to take Bangalore to eclipse Delhi's 134-7 with one over to spare.

The South Africa allrounder completed a fine all-around performance having bowled accurately to take 1-17 in four overs.

"He (Kallis) is a superb cricketer with a great attitude," Bangalore coach Ray Jennings said. "I respect him as a legend ... I'm privileged to work with four legends - Kallis, (Mark) Boucher, Dravid and (Anil) Kumble."

Nagar, a 19-year-old offspinner playing in his first IPL match, was the pick of the Delhi attack with 2-20 in two overs.

Captain Virender Sehwag, who continued to underperform after getting out for a duck, was forced to defend his personal form and shrugged off suggestions that his team was losing its early rhythm.

"As long as we are winning, my form is not important," Sehwag said. "It's a team game. If it's not me performing, then it's someone else. It's part and parcel of the game."

NEW DELHI: Here's a glimpse of DLF Indian Premier League coverage in the daily newspapers.

It's all down to nerves now. Times Of India writes as the Indian Premier League enters its last week, nail-chomping has all but become a national phenomenon and by the time the semi-finalists are identified, cricket-lovers will have to start looking for something else to chew on. It adds that the last few days have seen so many close matches that even the point's table is now scratching its head. In all likelihood, the teams that fail the nerves-test will not come down to winning matches anymore and it will all be about not losing them.

Everyone was talking about brother Yusuf before IPL II. Quietly, the junior Pathan has come up the ranks and played a big role in the survival of Kings XI Punjab so far. Hindustan Times says that in the world of bubbles that T20 or IPL can sometimes be, players come to the fore by turn. A few good outings bring them under the spotlight for a while before someone else displaces them. There isn't anything constant about it. "I just wanted to play before the tournament started. I hardly played any international cricket last year because other players were doing well. So, before the IPL and looking ahead to the T20 World Cup, I was praying that I get a chance to play regularly. When you perform at crucial times, it makes a big difference to your confidence. For me, it's done a world of good, especially before the T20 World Cup," Irfan tells Hindustan Times.

It was Joginder Sharma a couple of years back. Today, it's Irfan Pathan. He has become a bit of a last over hero for whichever team he plays and it's no different in the IPL either. If he did the job with the bat against the Knight Riders and Team Delhi on Monday, it was Pathan's chance to show what he can do with the ball. Times Of India writes he is the first one to concede that there's an element of luck attached to winning matches in the last over. "It was my luck tonight and I won. If you ask me, I would say the pressure was on them. The key to winning these moments is not to take the pressure on yourself and I guess that worked," Pathan said with a characteristic smile on his face to Times Of India.

Shane Warne and Adam Gilchrist are giving leadership a good name in the IPL and it's not just by accident. Sandip Patil writes in Mid Day that while Gilchrist's leadership for Deccan Chargers is poles apart from that of VVS Laxman last year, Warne has shown that he is numero uno in extracting the best out of his players no matter how talented or limited they are. Gilchrist seems determined to prove that he could soon be on par with the great Victorian in this aspect.

Mahela Jayawardene wants to perfect his swing; Jacques Kallis is wondering why it's difficult to hit the stationary ball; and Mark Boucher is just happy to be wearing knee-length shorts as he makes his way up from a bunker. The Indian Express writes that it may seem that the three have taken a wrong turn and ended up at the Wanderers Golf Course rather than the cricket ground, but in reality the cricketers have a fascination for golf. "It's a very relaxing sport, and great fun," says Jayawardene, as he prepares to embark on the backward journey, after saving par on the ninth. "Even though cricket and family take a lot of time, I try to play golf at every opportunity available - it's a great stress buster."

Amit Mishra has been the Delhi Daredevils' premier spinner in their nine victories (from 12 matches) that helped them secure a semi-final berth. When Daniel Vettori had to sit out in order to allow four other foreigners to play, Mishra more than held his own. By his own yardsticks, though, Mishra has fallen short. Talking to Hindustan Times Mishra, said, "I had set out to get more wickets than I have managed. If you don't take wickets, you cannot put the opposition under pressure. T20 is not always about economical bowling."

Unlike in Tests and ODI, where the path has been paved by years of experience, Twenty20 still remains unchartered territory. Cricketers haven't quite mastered the art of excelling in cricket's shortest format. But, then, it's not just about trying to hit every delivery into orbit; many during the IPL are showing there's scope to construct innings. "In the 120 balls you play, 100 may be really difficult but even if you can take advantage of 20 deliveries then it makes all the difference,'' says AB de Villiers of Delhi Daredevils to Times Of India.

Icon players have had a torrid time in this season of the IPL. Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid had started off brilliantly, only to taper off as the tournament progressed, while Sourav Ganguly has had a woeful run and is now hoping that the tournament ends soon so that he can go back. Sehwag was not even close to being at his best. Barring Yuvraj Singh, who's done it with the ball and not the bat, none of the big boys of Indian cricket have really come to the party. Times Of India writes that the left-hander, along with Sehwag, still has a week left to stamp the mark of the icons on the tournament. It's time for us to wait and watch.

As the DLF Indian Premier League enters its last stage, pressure on players is beginning to tell. Jacques Kallis in his column in Times Of India writes that there are no laws which dictate that certain players will be affected by nerves and others not. "We are seeing more and more effects of pressure on players. We have seen a team score 21 off the last over to win and we have seen a team defend a mere four runs in the final over. Experienced players may react negatively under pressure less often than young players, but it can strike any one of us - at any time. It may be one of the oldest sayings in cricket, but it has never been truer than now in the IPL -- the game is never won until the last ball has been bowled."

In Twenty20 cricket one big thing is not to plan too much, writes Ross Taylor in Times Of India. He says that on his day any batsman can bat unbelievably or any bowler can bowl a great spell, so all your plans can go for a toss. "Planning is important, but be prepared for an element of surprise when you get into a Twenty20 game," writes Taylor, adding that the final week is the time when the fortunes will be decided for good or worse. "Our next rivals Delhi Daredevils have played well right through this year and that will be a big challenge for us going forward. It's a big game, one which we must win to reach the semifinals. It is just basically down to the fact that we need to win our final two league games to make it through to the semi-finals. And if we don' beat Delhi, it is pretty clear that the tournament is pretty much over for us."

Brendon McCullum is a relieved man, at least for the time being. The Kolkata Knight Riders captain revealed in a press conference that he finally felt a lot better and will enjoy the night after his team managed to snap their losing streak in the Indian Premier League against Chennai Super Kings on Monday. According to a report in The Telegraph, McCullum said, "It feels a lot better, having won this match. We have been playing well for the last couple of matches, but we ended up on the wrong side in them. It was better this time."

He is yet to fire in the ongoing Indian Premier League but his side has already qualified for the semi-finals. Virender Sehwag is hoping to find his form ahead of the last-four stage of the tournament. According to agency report in DNA Sehwag feels it was just a matter of time before both he and Gambhir started scoring and if that happened it would be a bonus for his team. "I hope I will get runs in the next couple matches that we have to play before the semi-final. And if Gautam and I manage to find our form, that will be bonus for our team," he said.

Fielding has begun to have a great deal of say in the IPL as it heads into its business end. Ravi Shastri writes in Hindustan Times that as matches are being decided on the final balls and the margin of runs is little, the result is often decided by fielding. "The margin of error in this IPL has been very little. Just imagine if Rohit Sharma, on Sunday, hadn't got out in the final over, the task of 4 runs from 4 balls should have been easy against the Kings XI. Or Mumbai Indians' tail conceding critical run outs in the final over against Rajasthan Royals to end up losing by just two runs. Or that final over of Mashrafe Mortaza when 21 runs couldn't be defended," writes Shastri.

Allan Donald recalls the time South Africa were known as the greatest chokers and has some balm for Mumbai Indians' skipper Sachin Tendulkar. Ironically, Donald was at the centre-stage of the biggest heartbreak in South Africa's cricket history - the 1999 World Cup semi-final defeat to Australia. The Indian Premier League is all about high pressure situations and when you talk to Donald about pressure, his thoughts instinctively go back to that 1999 game. "Being run out on the fourth ball of the last over of the greatest semi-final in the World Cup history was the biggest disappointment of my career. A lot of people blamed me for that. It was the worst period of my career," Donald told Mid Day.

Empathising with Sachin Tendulkar and his team, Donald says, "He's experienced enough and has seen the ups and down. He will be better off for the experience. He's the best batsman I have ever seen. As a teenager, he took to batting as duck to water." Donald felt that Tendulkar would be better off without the extra burden of captaincy. "He has so much pressure of expectations from everyone that it's best he is not burdened with captaincy," he said to Mid Day.

Consumers can go online anywhere with a host of wireless connectivity options and Lenovo has equipped the netbook with Dolby Headphone technology to amplify customers' audio experience. Users can wear any set of headphones to hear surround sound audio from 5.1 channels of sound. With the Lenovo QuickStart application users can listen to music, view photos, send instant messages or make Skype calls without waiting for their operating system to boot. Users will also be able to log into the PC with their face with VeriFace facial recognition technology.

With Lenovo's OneKey Rescue System consumers can recover their data if it becomes corrupted in a few simple steps. The tool can also be configured to run virus scanning before entering the main operating system to restore damaged files and allow users to back up and recover their data.

The IdeaPad S10-2 netbook will be available at the end of May on www.lenovo.com and through business partners beginning at the end of June. Models start at $349.

BSNL’s $6-b GSM contract:-Ericsson, Huawei shortlisted

equipment major Ericsson and Chinese manufacturer of telecom gear Huawei have been shortlisted by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd for its mega 93-million-line cellular project. The project size is estimated to be around $6 billion, making it the single largest contract in the world.

While Ericsson has been shortlisted for North and East zones, Huawei has qualified for West, East and South zones. Other bidders, including ZTE, Nokia Siemens and Alcatel Lucent, have been disqualified on technical grounds. Some of the vendors disqualified, including Nokia Siemens, have supplied equipment to BSNL earlier

Quoting prices

With only one vendor having qualified from three zones, the financial bids submitted by the qualified companies may have lost their relevance. Since there is no second qualified bidder in North, West and South, BSNL will have to give the contract at the price quoted by Ericsson and Huawei respectively. The project envisages both GSM and 3G network rollout.

However, BSNL cannot award the contracts immediately since the Ministry of Home Affairs is yet to give its clearance from the security point of view.

The Ministry had raised concerns regarding some of the foreign vendors, especially about Huawei from China. A committee was set up by the Ministry to evaluate the background of the bidders before the contracts are awarded. This committee is yet to submit its report.

Seeking to open bids

Meanwhile, BSNL has written to the Department of Telecom seeking permission to open the bids submitted by Ericsson in the North zone even before the Ministry submits its report.

BSNL has told the DoT that it was facing acute shortage of GSM capacity and since Ericsson was already an established vendor on its network, the contract for the North zone should be awarded to the Swedish company for this region.

The project is part of a major expansion plan aimed at giving BSNL enough capacity to expand its subscriber base. While private operators have been adding over 2.5 million new users a month, BSNL is adding just over a million.

Mobile TV will do good in Indian Market

Despite regulatory hurdles and spectrum issues, the world of television or TV on mobiles is making a promising start in India with players like UTV and National Geographic channel joining the increasing number of players like Reliance Communications, MTNL and BSNL.

While the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has approved the access of TV on mobiles, service providers still cannot stream live TV channels on to the handset due to spectrum allocation from the Ministry of Information and Broadcast. However, since the regulations do not allow a direct transmission of TV channels, service providers as well as content providers have started using a technology called Unicast which provides content to end-user on a one-on-one basis. One handset pulls content from a central repository and transmits it through a wireless network.

Public service broadcaster Doordarshan currently offers limited mobile TV services in Delhi. However, the market has seen increased activities from various stakeholders including technology providers, network equipment vendors and mobile service providers.

For instance, UTV New Media — the digital arm of UTV — recently announced the launch of a music video channel on Mobile TV. Branded as UTV@play, this will provide users an exclusive mobile channel where they can access videos and music with a click of a button. With a catalogue of 15,000-20,000 songs, UTV with this launch is expecting to garner at lest 10,000 subscribers in the very first year. T N Prabhu, CEO, UTV New Media feels there are users who are interested in such content. “We have seen that users from India stream video’s from International sites. We are sure there is enough users who are looking for such content on the mobile handsets,” said Prabhu. The National Geographic channel, too, has joined the fray by launching Nat Geo Mobile.

With over 300 million mobile phone users in India, and an addition of almost 10 million users every month, mobile TV does hold a promise. Springboard Research, in a recent report, estimates that mobile TV services market in India could reach $360 million (around Rs 1,780 crore). The report says that in the first year of operation, mobile TV could reach a penetration level of 5 to 6 per cent (of the total mobile subscriber base) in India. If taken at the current subscriber base of 375 million, this would mean that India will have over 20 million mobile TV subscribers within the first year of the launch of service.

Reliance Communication, through its R-world has been providing mobile TV for quite some time now. “While its difficult to quantify the number of users, Reliance has revenues in a few lakhs every month through its mobile TV offering. We are currently offering 11 news channel. A user can watch TV on the handset with a lag of a few minutes as they are not transmitted live,” said Krishna Durbha, Head Business and Marketing, VAS Reliance Communications. But he believes that there are still lot of barriers.

Shiva Bayypunedi, director and founder of Apalya Technologies, provides technology support for mobile TV for service providers like MTNL, BSNL, Spice, UTV among others feels that the Indian mobile TV market is still very nascent. “Other than the spectrum issues, constrain in handset, standardisation of technology platform are some of the barriers for the growth of this segment. Moreover, India is still predominantly a prepaid market. In such a scenario getting the volumes is difficult,” adds Bayypunedi.

A Springboard research indicates that 50 per cent of respondents (base of 1,215 users) said they would be very interested in mobile TV, while another 34 per cent said they would be fairly interested in it if it were available and affordable. Besides, a high percentage (86 per cent) of those surveyed said they would be either among the first to try or would definitely try a new service if somebody showed them how to use it.

Bharti Airtel Planning launch Virtual Phone.

Telecom operator Bharti Airtel is planning to launch "Virtual Phones", a technology that allows users to use as many as 10 different numbers from a single phone, reports the Financial Chronicle.

Developed by Bharti-owned Comviva Technologies, the application comes embedded with the SIM card and offers users to "opt" for his number whenever the user requires it. The user group will be password protected with each user having his own password to access his phone. Airtel is reportedly undertaking field trials of the service. Comviva, in co-operation with South African operator MTN, already has the service in South Africa. Airtel expects the technology to be operational in two months time and India might see the first services roll out in the rural areas of the country.

According to Airtel, no other operator in India has a similar technology currently and for the same reason, the implementation of this technology will provide Airtel an early head start in this segment.

The idea is to provide subscribers more value with just a single instrument. While there have been cases of one SIM using two numbers, if Airtel's plans bears fruits, it will be the first time that users will get as many as ten numbers from a single SIM and that too, with just one handset. Singapore's SingTel and UAE's Etisalat already have this system in place where users have been assigned two numbers on the same SIM card.

Bharti & Alcatel-Lucent in JV

Bharti Airtel and Alcatel-Lucent, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fixed-line phone equipment, announced a joint venture to manage the Indian telecom major’s fixed-line and broadband internet businesses.
Alcatel-Lucent will hold 74 per cent in the venture and Bharti Airtel the remaining equity.
Bharti has also signed a five-year $500 million (about Rs 2,500 crore) managed services deal with the new company for five years.
Apart from managing the broadband and fixed-line network, the joint venture will also install the services in consumer premises and upgrade the network. The joint venture will also offer services such as high-speed internet and video conferencing.
Alcatel Lucent will run the joint venture. The bulk of the 4,000 staffers for the joint venture will come from Bharti Airtel and the rest from Alcatel-Lucent. The joint venture will not, however, entail an asset transfer from Bharti and the subscribers and their revenues will be on Bharti Airtel’s books.
This is the second India deal for Alcatel. Last year, it signed a 70:30 joint venture with Reliance Communications for managed services for CDMA and GSM networks, also a five-year $500 million and for five years.
This is the first joint venture that Bharti has signed for managed services. The telecom company has signed several other multi-million dollar outsourcing contracts with Nokia Siemens, Ericsson and IBM. Explaining the reason for the change Manoj Kohli CEO and joint managing director of Bharti Airtel, said: “Unlike in wireless where you have to just put in a passive network and subscribers can roll in, the broadband business is very different. You have to go to consumer homes, install the equipment, explain how it works and that requires a lot more engagement. We thought for such a business a joint venture would be a more effective structure.”
Kohli added that the deal would help Bharti Airtel save costs but he did not quantify the savings. Bharti has only three million broadband customers and fixed-line customers in 95 cities across India and finds the need to scale up the numbers, if the government's target of 20 million broadband subscribers is to be met by 2010 (India has 6.2 million subscribers).
